Project File
Located at 40 Terrace Avenue in Roxbury, Massachusetts, this project is conceived as a modern four-story building dedicated to artist live-work units, with a ground-floor gallery that engages directly with the neighborhood. The design emphasizes affordability and efficiency, providing functional spaces that nurture creativity while integrating thoughtfully into the urban context.
Architectural Expression
The building’s façade is characterized by vertical knotty wood cladding that introduces warmth and a tactile quality to the structure. This verticality accentuates the building’s height and creates a rhythmic pattern that reflects the dynamic nature of artistic creation. The wood’s natural imperfections celebrate material authenticity, adding depth and interest to the exterior.
Anchoring the building is a robust brick base, grounding it within the historical material palette of Roxbury. This combination of wood and brick establishes a dialogue between contemporary design and traditional architectural elements, ensuring the building resonates with its surroundings while asserting a distinct identity.
Spatial Design and Functionality
The artist live-work units are meticulously designed to maximize space and natural light—essential elements for creative work. Open floor plans provide flexibility, allowing residents to adapt the spaces to their specific needs and artistic practices. Large windows are strategically placed to facilitate ample daylighting, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting and creating an inviting atmosphere conducive to creativity.
Ground-Floor Gallery Integration
At street level, the gallery serves as a public interface, fostering a connection between the artists and the community. The transparent frontage invites passersby into the space, encouraging engagement with the art and activating the streetscape. This openness promotes a cultural exchange and positions the building as a vibrant node within the neighborhood.
Collaboration and Partnership
Developed in conjunction with the architects-turned-developers at Primary Development, this project exemplifies the collaborative partnerships that are a strength of Zephyr Architects. The synergy between design and development teams allowed for innovative solutions and a shared vision, resulting in a building that both respects its context and pushes the boundaries of contemporary design.
