11 Tafthill Terrace

Roslindale, MA

Located on a narrow urban lot in the heart of Roslindale, our project at 11 Tafthill Terrace presented a unique design challenge: how to maximize light and livable space within a compact footprint while maintaining strong circulation and functional flow. The solution was a bold yet strategic use of chevron formal organization—a design move that transformed limitations into opportunities.

Expanding Possibility with Chevron Geometry

Rather than defaulting to a traditional linear form, the project embraced a chevron layout, allowing the building to subtly shift and angle along its length. This approach created additional space at the windows, projecting living and bedroom areas outward to capture more natural light and open up views. The resulting geometry gives each unit a sense of expansion, even within a tight lot, and introduces dynamic lines to the façade that enrich the street presence.

Light on Both Sides: A Corridor That Connects and Illuminates
A central design innovation lies on the third floor, where a single corridor connects both the fourth and second floors. This efficient circulation strategy minimizes interior dead space and maximizes access to the building’s vertical core. More importantly, it frees up both exterior walls for windows, ensuring that bedrooms and living spaces on both sides of the building receive ample natural light—a rare achievement on a narrow site.
