Project File

Situated along the tranquil banks of the Charles River in Dedham, Massachusetts, The Moseley stands as a thoughtful continuation of the site’s rich history. Once home to the beloved Moseley Dance Hall—a cornerstone of community and culture—the location now embraces a new chapter that honors its past while looking toward the future.

Architectural Vision

In designing The Moseley, our aim was to create a building that resonates with its historical context and natural surroundings. The use of brick as the primary material pays homage to traditional craftsmanship, offering a sense of permanence and connection to the locale. The building is bookended by stoic, well-proportioned volumes that ground the structure and reflect a respect for architectural order.

Between these anchors, the façade becomes more animated. The central portion introduces a dynamic interplay of balconies and varied forms, bringing a sense of movement and vitality to the building. This “playful middle” is not merely an aesthetic choice but a deliberate gesture to capture the spirit of the dance hall that once energized the site—a place of rhythm, interaction, and community.

Integration with the Environment

Recognizing the significance of the Charles River, the design seeks to foster a harmonious relationship between the built environment and nature. Generous windows and outdoor spaces provide residents with sweeping views of the river, while also ensuring ample natural light within the interiors. The landscaping around the building is curated to enhance this connection, featuring native plantings that support local ecology.

Community Engagement

The mixed-use nature of The Moseley—with retail spaces at the ground level and 51 residential units above—reflects a commitment to contributing positively to the community fabric. The retail component activates the street, encouraging pedestrian activity and providing amenities that serve both residents and the wider neighborhood. Below-grade parking is incorporated to minimize the visual impact of vehicles, maintaining a focus on human-scale interactions.

Craftsmanship and Sustainability

Attention to detail and quality of construction are paramount. The choice of durable, sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems underscores our dedication to creating buildings that are not only beautiful but responsible. The design maximizes passive strategies—such as orientation, shading, and natural ventilation—to enhance comfort and reduce environmental impact.

A Living Legacy

The Moseley is more than a residential building; it’s a place that embodies continuity and change. By reflecting on the site’s historical significance and engaging thoughtfully with its context, we’ve endeavored to create a space where people can live meaningfully connected to both their community and the natural world around them.
