Project File
Situated in the vibrant South End of Boston, 511 Massachusetts Avenue is a restored historic bowfront building that marries the elegance of the past with the comforts of contemporary living. This project exemplifies a thoughtful approach to urban restoration, contributing to the rich architectural tapestry of the neighborhood.
Architectural Expression
The building’s front façade, a classic representation of South End bow front architecture, was completely restored to its original grandeur. This meticulous restoration involved preserving period-specific details, including ornate brickwork and characteristic bay windows, ensuring that the building remains a cherished element of the streetscape.
In contrast, the rear of the building was reimagined with a modern sensibility. Expansive windows and dynamic projecting decks were introduced, infusing the structure with natural light and providing residents with private outdoor spaces. This bold intervention creates a dialogue between the historic front and the contemporary rear, symbolizing a bridge between past and present.
Spatial Design and Functionality
The interior underwent a complete gut renovation to transform the building into five luxury condominiums. Each unit was designed to maximize space and functionality while respecting the building’s historical nuances. High-quality finishes and open floor plans create elegant living spaces that cater to modern lifestyles.
The expansive rear windows not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also flood the interiors with daylight, creating bright and inviting environments. The projecting decks extend the living spaces outdoors, offering urban dwellers a rare connection to the open air amidst the citysca
